When Love and Authority Live Outside Us

What is the first thing a child learns about love?

Long before we have words for it, love comes from outside us.

Someone feeds us, comforts us, protects us, decides what is safe, what is dangerous, what is allowed and what is not.

And alongside love comes authority.

For a child, those two things can become deeply intertwined.

The person who loves me knows what is best for me.
The person who cares for me has the right to decide.
If I resist, I may risk punishment, disapproval or loss of connection.

Over time, this can shape more than our beliefs. It can shape the way we perceive love, safety, authority and choice.

We may grow up consciously knowing that we have a right to say no, make our own decisions and disagree with people we care about.

But the body may still carry older rules.

What happens inside you when someone strongly disagrees?

When someone says they know what is best for you?

When love comes with expectation, pressure or obligation?

Do you become compliant? Defiant? Angry? Frozen? Do you disappear from yourself while attending to them?

These responses are information.

They can show us how deeply old associations around love and authority have become embedded.

This does not mean we need to reject love, expertise, guidance or interdependence.

It means putting them back into proportion.

Love without ownership.
Care without control.
Guidance without compulsory obedience.
Relationship without disappearance.
Interdependence without surrendering sovereignty.

Someone can love me and still be wrong about what is best for me.

I can care about someone and still say no.

I can listen, consider, question, seek advice and still remain the person who decides.

Love does not grant ownership.

This month inside Quantum Soul Upgrade, we’re exploring Perception — including the conditioning, assumptions and learned associations that shape what feels true, safe, loving or necessary.

QSU is currently open for new members until 12 noon on Tuesday 13 October, Brisbane time.

If this is the kind of territory you want to explore more deeply, you’re welcome to join us.
